Honda PUYO Concept World Premiere in Tokyo

Honda PUYO concept rear
Honda has lifted our spirits this morning by revealing first details of Honda CR-Z Concept but has since crushed them with their second Tokyo Motor Show concept premiere, the PUYO. Ironically Honda states in the press release, “The PUYO was designed based on out-of-box thinking to provide fun for both the vehicle owner and people around them as well.” They had to think “out-of-the-box” to create a box?

It’s no stunner, but closer look of the minimalist design has us moving past first impressions as the PUYO shows some interesting ideas for the “cornerless soft box” whose goal was to “create a personable design with the feel of an adorable pet”.

On the outside the PUYO has a gel body as a safety feature which is also luminescent. It can change color to communicate the vehicles condition as well as guide people into the proper operating position. This is important because the PUYO has four-wheel-steering which allows the entire vehicle to pivot 360 degrees.

With the entire upper half of the vehicle made of glass, the PUYO gives a sense of transparency while the interior seeks a “silky feel”. Interior features such as instrument panel monitor, elastic controls which rise up when started, luminous fluid displays and a joystick which replaces the traditional steering wheel all add to the overall mentality of the fun and friendly vehicle.

Press Release

‘PUYO’ is a Japanese onomatopoeia that expresses the sensation of touching the vehicle’s soft body. It is meant to convey a warm, friendly impression.

The PUYO represents a new idea in mobility that brings together ‘clean’, ‘safe’ and ‘fun’ functionality in an environmentally responsible, people-friendly minimalist design featuring an ultra-high efficiency, small frame and fuel cell technology to please both users and onlookers alike.

Exterior design

The development theme for the PUYO exterior was to create a cornerless, ‘Seamless Soft Box’ form that is kind to both people and the environment. The goal was to create a personable design with the feel of an adorable pet, while taking advantage of the maximum spaciousness of the box-shaped design. The PUYO’s ‘gel body’ features soft materials to promote greater real-world safety. Moreover, the body has been made luminescent to guide people into the proper operating position and notify them of the vehicle’s condition, facilitating a more intimate relationship between people and their cars.

Interior design

Developed to have a ‘Silky Feel’, the PUYO’s interior is designed to provide a refreshing, people-friendly space imbued with a feeling of transparency. Features such as an instrument panel monitor, controls that take advantage of the elastic qualities of cloth to rise up when the vehicle starts up, luminous fluid meter displays, and a joystick for intuitive operation are all designed to gently support occupants’ senses and sensibilities.

Honda CR-Z Concept Debuts in Tokyo

Honda CR-Z concept rear
Honda has released today initial info and photos for its’ CR-Z (Compact Renaissance Zero) concept car to be unveiled at the Tokyo Motor Show in two weeks. Referred to as a next generation lightweight sports car, the CR-Z is clearly influenced by the compact front-wheel-drive sports car, CR-X (Civic Renaissance Model X), which was built from 1983 to 1991.

Honda highlights futuristic design, sporty driving dynamics and hi-tech user interface as well as a small environmental footprint. However, Honda is putting additional emphasis on the design approach of the CR-Z as it seeks to challenge compact car stereotypes. Honda states in the press release, “CR-Z - an expression intended to capture the idea of a renaissance in the design of compact cars that begins anew from fundamentals. ”

Honda is attempting to offset any negative “small car” vibes, which the original CR-X suffered, by emphasizing an interior which is open and spacious as opposed to claustrophobic and confined. This is achieved with the panoramic windshield, sun roof and lift gate which almost form a continuous sheet of glass. Combined with sporty driving dynamics and hybrid power plant the CR-Z sets to change the boring driving image of small hybrid cars.

A CR-X successor has been much anticipated for many years and with Honda’s excellent brand image, particularly in the U.S, the return of the CR-X couldn’t be timed better as hybrid popularity continues to increase.

Press Release

‘CR-Z’ stands for ‘Compact Renaissance Zero’—an expression intended to capture the idea of a renaissance in the design of compact cars that begins anew from fundamentals.

This design research model of a lightweight hybrid sports car features advanced technologies that deliver enjoyable driving for all while reducing the vehicle’s environmental footprint.

Exterior design

Designed to be ‘Futuristic and Dynamic’, the CR-Z combines powerful performance in a compact form with a futuristic image. For its frontal view, an over-sized grill with a high- performance look is offset by openings on each side that lighten the overall feel. In the rear, tube-shaped rear combination lamps ensure better rearward visibility. Design details emphasizing the CR-Z’s advanced image include door mirrors that provide high visibility in a stylish form, LED headlights patterned after luminous bodies to convey a sharp impression, and jaunty fin-shaped sub-lights. Large, 19-inch wheels are ready for dynamic driving performance.

Interior design

The key words for the CR-Z’s interior design are ‘Hi-tech and Sporty’. The goal was to create an all-new sporty interior that fuses the liberating feel of airy spaciousness with an advanced interface that brings out the fun of the drive. Mesh material on a simple framework construction is used throughout the interior to convey a light, sophisticated image without being oppressive. In the cockpit, the meter unit conveys the image of advanced technology ensconced in a piece of glass artwork, offering the functionality of immediate recognition while enhancing the driving experience with a futuristic and exhilarating feeling.

Acura RSX/Honda Integra HKS turbo

Top Secret Turbo DC5 Acura RSX / Honda Integra

This Type-S is one of the first street cars to pack HKS’s most recent RSX firepower.

By Dan Frio

When we checked in with HKS reps at the SEMA show last November, they assured us the company’s RSX Type-S turbo kit was days away from completion and shipping to dealers. Days turned out to be weeks, but not long after the new year, we got confirmation the kit was here, available and ready for primetime. The next step was to find someone who had one.

Fred Chang’s JDM wet dream of a Type-S seemed an obvious choice. He knows some of the guys at HKS and even picked up sponsorship from the company well before the turbo kit was launched. Chang says he casually broached the issue of doing the turbo install on his RSX–”just friendly talk,” he says–and soon enough his car was at XS Engineering (Huntington Beach, Calif.) for the install and tuning.

HKS Marketing says the kit had been approximately one year in development, developed first for use in a sport compact challenge event organized by a mainstream automotive magazine. The company’s DC5 ended up winning the FWD class. HKS knew it might have a hit on its hands, despite its usual allegiance to Nissan and Toyota tuning. All of the R&D occurred in the United States, with manufacturing carried out in Japan.

The production kit’s results are impressive. Tuned with 100-octane gas and using HKS’s Super Mega Flow intake, 65mm Hi-Power exhaust and upgraded actuator, Chang’s car made 357.2 whp and 293.7 lb-ft at 14 psi on the XS dyno. Since the Type-S is his daily driver, Chang doesn’t see that kind of power on the street, where he runs between 7-9 psi. But it’s still plenty of streetable power and twist.
Even if you didn’t know what Chang is packing underhood, the car still blows minds with its paint scheme and, to the trained eye, an obsession to JDM detail.

The paint is first to catch your eye. “Top Secret was my inspiration,” Chang says, referring to the popular Japanese tuner. “In Super Taikyu [Japan's endurance race series], there are these girls that run the Top Secret RSX and I really like the color scheme. At the time I painted it, around April 2004, there weren’t so many gold cars around.”

The inspiration extends to Mugen, of which Chang is clearly a fan. “I’ve always liked how they designed their cars. I had an EK that was completely all Mugen kit. I’ve always liked their designs and they were creative at the time, then all these fakes came out.”
Prospective JDM miners might want to take a cue from Chang, who purchased a lot of his parts from JDMHondaParts.com (jhpusa.com) before he even bought the car, knowing the time and delay that are inevitable when buying Japanese parts.

“When I first got the car it was white, so I did the whole Type R theme. But that got old fast. Then I took it to MOB and they stripped it down. They didn’t drop the motor, but they got in around the [firewall] and strut towers. Everything underneath all of the panels is pretty much all taken out.”
When we look closely at the car, we realize about the only non-JDM parts are the Rotora binders package and the fuel pump. Damn. Chang even went the road less traveled with his seats, sourcing a set of carbon/Kevlar buckets from Vision, a company that makes parts for Spoon Sports, among others. “The seats are super rare,” Chang says. “There are probably only, like, five sets in the United States.”

The car gets plenty of attention, and not always of the desired kind. While most of the time Chang says he gets a thumbs-up or other gestures of approval, he often gets guys in Mustangs pulling alongside to make stupid faces as well as the usual ranks of ricer noobs.

The cops, of course, also can’t help but notice. But Chang has never had a problem. “I tell them what the car is, what it has on it. They’re interested. I’ve done the whole pop-the-hood thing and answered their questions. They haven’t really hassled me too much. Knock on wood, I’ve never been sent to a ref. I think if you’re cool with them, they’ll be cool with you.”
Chang’s personal landspeed record is 152 mph, set in controlled conditions at a decommissioned Marine air base in Southern California. He’s less impressed with his kill record.

“It’s not really any cars you’d brag about. I once raced an M3 and took him. But it’s usually just a four-door EF or something, which is retarded. They all have [built] motors. You just have to put them in their place.”

Fred Chang’s 2003 rsx type-s

Engine
Block and valvetrain internals remain stock, the only power adders being the HKS turbo kit and the standard bolt-ons package. The GT2835 kit includes HKS’s cast ductile iron manifold, charge piping, straight-through downpipe, upgraded actuator, Super Sequential blow-off valve, and wastegate. Chang also added the optional GT intercooler. A Walbro 255-lph fuel pump ensures plenty of juice, which is sprayed through RC Engineering 550cc injectors and lit off by HKS Super Fire racing spark plugs.Additionally, HKS’s Earth Circle grounding system preserves otherwise robbed power, while the F-Con VPro (version 3.2) piggyback unit orchestrates engine management.Up and downstream of the powerplant is HKS’ Super Mega Flow air intake/filter piece and prototype Hi-Power Turbo 65mm exhaust. Other details include steel-braided oil lines, TMR fittings, a Braille race battery relocated to the rear hatch area, JDM Type-R valve cover, Vision carbon-fiber spark plug cover and intake manifold cover, HKS D1 Limited oil and radiator caps, and Mugen gas cap.
Rims & Rubber
Advan A048 (225/40/18) tires wrap Volk Racing CE28N 18×7.5s in custom gold (+45 offset; 114.3×5 pattern). Rays Duraluminum Red lugs keep ‘em attached.

Stance
More HKS at the corners, this time in the form of Hipermax II coil-overs. Battling flex are Mugen strut tower bars front and rear, EM Racing cross bars in back, a J’s Racing C-pillar bar and Carbing rear lower control arm bars

Resistance
Stopping power comes from Rotora’s E-coated cross-drilled and slotted rotors, four-piston calipers, pads and lines. Chang uses NEO brake fluid
FASHION
Body: Chang undertook a JDM mission when styling his whip inside and out. Up front sits a Mugen bumper, canards, and underbody panel, augmented by DC5 Type R HID headlamp assemblies and badges. A Mugen Side Step kit sets the side profiles, while the Mugen adjustable rear wing and DC5 Type R rear apron shape the backside. Other subtle touches include Mugen front and rear tow hooks, DC5 Type R side markers and window visor, and Vision mirrors.

The beautiful Star Gold Effect paint (what we call Top Secret Gold around the office) was handled by MOB Works in Orange, Calif., who transformed the Type-S from its humble Premium Pearl White origins all around, including in the engine bay and the interior

Inside: More JDM obsessions: DC5 Type R shift boot, gauge cluster, coin pocket and door sills. Seating arranged by Vision Corsa carbon Kevlar buckets (using factory 3-point restraints) perched atop Bride Super Low brackets and rails. Driver input handled by Mugen N1 suede steering wheel with Sparco quick release and HKS D1 Limited shift knob. Chang monitors engine performance through HKS RS meters for boost, oil pressure, water temp and EGT

ICE:
Chang kept it simple in the ICE department, electing only for a Rockford Fosgate RAV-DVD2 head unit for music and video duties, piped through the factory Bose front and rear speakers

Another article for the Dazz Motorsports Turbo TSX / Euro

The people demanded it: An affordable four door sport sedan incorporating the performance and luxury benchmarks the high-end division of Honda has become known for. Last spring, the people got what they wanted: The Acura TSX, with a 2.4-liter, 200-hp engine hooked to a six-speed manual, race-bred suspension and a roomy, plush interior as only Acura could construct it. Priced between $25,000 and $30,000, the TSX offers potential buyers a high degree of bling for not a lot of cash, and puts other entry level European and Japanese luxury performance vehicles squarely in its sights.Naturally, a car like this targets a different buyer than that who would purchase, say, an RSX Type S, so you aren’t going to see a whole lot of modified TSX vehicles running around out there–at least not at this early stage. Then again, if its one thing we know, it’s that no matter the vehicle, there’s always someone who’s ready to wrench on it and wring the very last drops of performance from the powertrain and chassis.

Having said that, meet the latest addition to the long list of project cars from DAZZ Motorsports, a 2004 Acura TSX. According to Joey Ortega, sales and marketing manager for DAZZ, the company chose this platform because, well, no one else had. “It’s a little different platform than others we’ve done in the past,” he said. “Also, with the popularity of cars like the 350Z and Evo VIII, we wanted to bring Honda/Acura vehicles back into the spotlight and show people that they’re still great cars to modify.”

Dazz Motorsports Turbo TSX / Euro

Here is a great example that there is some hope of turbo kits being avaliable for the Acura TSX, Honda Accord Euro. A lot of work went into this project as they had to overcome the Drive-by-wire system to allow for the turbo installation. This is a bit of a problem for owners wanting forced induction as there is a bit of stuffing around involved for it to work. This is a reason why many have chosen to go for the Comptech Supercharger path if they want forced induction but less headaches having it fitted. The turbo install pays off as it will be more likely to have a greater output plus better for daily driving and less strain on the engine compared to a supercharger.
